GD

A big shocked to me! I was diagnozed with Gestational Diabetes!. I really can't believe it. My OB referred me to the diabetes center so that I can learn about my new meal plan and also technique on how to monitor my own blood sugar at home. The funny thing is that I am doing well so far with no symptom at all and my 3 months blood sugar analysis showed that I'm not a diabetic and my blood sugar was within normal range. Probably I've been taking care of my diet and a big glass of glucose taken during the 3 hours glucose tolerance test just make my blood sugar go hay-wire. How does GD develop? According to the American Diabetes Association, they also don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but they do have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin. Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia. Well, I was told that GD will almost likely go away after my babies are delivered. A 2 hours glucose test will be needed after 6-8 weeks postpartum to test if my blood sugar is back to normal.
