It was a cold morning and mummy to be has to drive to the medical plaza eventhough the plaza is just about few hundred meters away from home.
Well,I started the whole visit with an urine test and blood pressure. Both results were normal. Then, I stepped onto the weighing machine and dada! it was 98.6lbs....an increase of 3.6lbs since my first weighing 4 weeks ago. I was extremely worried that I couldn't gain enough weight but looks like I have the capability after all the hard work, "EATING!". Still have to keep it up though. The nurse then brought me into an exam room and another nurse took over her job. Ann, the senior nurse at Eastover asked me some questions related to my family medical history, gave me some pamplets, and walk thru my bloodwork results that I did 4 weeks ago. Everything else was good except the they found Group Beta Streptococcus in my blood!GBS is one of the many bacteria that usually do not cause serious illness. It can be found in the digestive, urinary and reproductive tracts of women and even men. In women, it is often found in the vagina and rectum. However, GBS is not a sexually transmitted disease. She also mentioned that since I don't show any symptom, I could be "colonized". When the bacteria doesn't grow or causing symptoms, infection will never occur. But the down side of GBS for pregnant women is that it can pass it to her baby. So, I will most likely be treated with antibiotics through IV if my babies are ready for vagina birth. If c-section, it is not necessary to be given antibiotics during delivery, because the babies will not go thru the birth canal...so, chances of infection in nearly 0%.
Then she told me to decide if I want to go thru another 2 testing for Down Syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis. At my age, I am at low risk of getting a Down Syndrome baby. As for Cystic Fibrosis, the baby will most likely to be affected if both father and mother are carriers. Chances of both Asian partners are CF carriers is about 1 in 8,100. Eventhough the statistic showed low risk, I will want to discuss with WT if the testing is necessary because it is very expensive.
The joy of the whole visit today was hearing my babies heartbeats thru a doppler. Baby on the left has a heartbeat of 160bpm while the baby on the right has a slightly faster rate, 164bpm. My uterus was also measured just to make sure that it is growing properly. My next appointment will be on January 2 and I have an ultrasound scheduled. Hopefully, I get to know the sexes of the babies.
Will be going for my first childbirth class on January 3.
