A tour of CMC Maternity Center

The moment I walked into the maternity center on the 8th floor of Carolina Medical Center, my heart was pumping so fast as though I've just ran a 100m race. It was kind of scary to visit the place now since I still have a few more months to go but I guess, the advantage of the tour organized by CMC is to help us (particularly the husbands!!!) familiarize with the place before the big day to prevent "kelam kabut". Many couples attended the tour and it lasted for about 45 minutes. Our first stop when we came out from the elevator was the family waiting room. The room wasn't very big but have plenty of seating area with coffee maker and etc. At that time, some family members were there eagerly waiting for the good news.

Then we walked to another side of the floor and we arrived at a private labor/ delivery/ recovery (LDR) suites. Each suite includes a rocking chair, large private bath, CD, DVD/VCR player and a place for a guest to stay overnight. Behind the comfortable furnishings of the birthing suite is a spectacular array of medical and technological equipments.

Our next stop was the most interesting one. The nursery!. We could see about 10 tiny babies bundle up in comfortable blankets sleeping soundly on individual cart. The older babies were place near to the see through window and the newborn were placed under the warmer to keep their temperature down. We were there for quite some time while waiting for one of the nurse to check if any postpartum room is available for us to visit. But unfortunately, there were none. Well, potpartum room is sort of like a recovery room after giving birth. The patient will be moved from the LDR to the poastpartum room for the rest of the stay in the hospital.

One of the reason that we choose CMC for delivery is because it is so near to our home but the most important reason is that CMC is the Regional Perinatal Center, with the largest neonatal intensive care nursery in the Carolinas, as well as the only ECMO (heart/lung respiratory assistance) system in the region. Carolinas Medical Center provides 24-hour neonatologist, perinatologist and anesthesiologist care as well as around the clock availability of every kind of specialist. Also, during the second stage of labor, the patient will get one to one nurse to patient care.

Now that we have seen the place, hopefully when the time arrive, everything will move smoothly.
